"When the nights draw in and curtains are pulled, I think back to the early days of the radio, before most of us had acquired the luxury of a television. As a family, we enjoyed Tony Hancock, Life with the Lyons, the Archers and Two Way Family Favourites. We could also find news, religion and information to broaden our minds, and those children’s programmes we probably best remember by name rather than actual content. A chocolate biscuit for anyone who remembers listening to Listen with Mother on their mother’s knee! Or Andy Pandy? The radio came into our schools as well, with Music and Movement and educational programmes, from prehistory to poetry. Our choices in the early days were confined to the Light and Home Service, but the BBC later met competition with stations such as Radio Luxembourg, and the attraction of American music for the teens desperately tuning their radios late at night.

Do you have any special memories of listening to the radio as a family? Or listening alone to your favourite music station? And did the listening habit continue for many years after?"

Come to the Museum and share your memories over a cup of tea.
