World Story Telling Day is on the 20th of this month. Stories and human evolution go hand in hand, whether people tried to make sense of the world around them, to provide guidance regarding behaviour or record some of the momentous events experienced. Stories of floods and ancient battles, of good triumphing over evil have been written in pictures on temple walls, in hieroglyphs, in early writing, and of course, most important of all, stories told at night over the campfire. And stories have continued through the age of print and the digital age, as well through the voices of people telling their own history. Probably stories – bible stories, fairy stories, myths and legends – were part of your childhood and growing up.
Are there any that made a particular impression on you? Or do you especially remember the occasions when you listened to stories, whether from a parent or sibling or teacher? And did any of your parents tell you stories about their own lives?
Come to the museum and share your memories over a cup of tea.
