Sunbul Akhtar, printmaker and illustrator of Muswell Hill, is holding a free block printing workshop in Wightman Road Mosque. Members of all faith communities in Haringey are invited to attend.

Sunbul is working with Haringey Multi Faith Forum to celebrate faith communities and inter-faith dialogue and cohesion in Haringey. Through the medium of printmaking, attendees are invited to explore what their faith means to them through the built environment, “I’m interested in telling the story of Haringey through the buildings that make up our local communities, and how these buildings inform our identity”, says Sunbul of the project. “The history of the buildings in this borough, like the people that make up the local community, have inherited and nurtured meaning and purpose. I think it is an honour to see how people view their faith through the built environment, whether that is in a place of worship, in the many parks and commons of Haringey that offer the community a green space, or in their own homes – our personal sanctuaries that sit within the borough”.

In this workshop attendees will:

  • create their own design of their place of worship
  • transfer the design to a block of lino
  • engrave the block using carving tools
  • hand roll ink
  • apply the ink to the block
  • print on to fabric

This fabric will be used to upholster a repurposed chair for the Haringey Feast as part of the Bruce Castle Museum and Archive's Storytelling Chairs Project.

Location: London Islamic Cultural Society and Mosque, 389 Wightman Road, N8 0HE
